An EM-based Algorithm for Constrained Layout Optimization

China Abstract: Layout optimization is a NP-hard and complex non-linear constrained optimization problem. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a Modified Electromagnetism-like Mechanism (MEM) algorithm. Firstly, the established local search method is modified and three different alternative methods are presented; Secondly, a constraint-handling strategy which is specially fit for the EM algorithm is proposed. Also, through two specific cases, we compare the proposed algorithm with such algorithms as the Multiplier Method, Genetic Algorithm, and Particle Swarm Optimization. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can produce solutions of extremely high quality at acceptable computational cost when solving low-dimension problems
